Ferry ‘Nuff

Driving towards the CBD during rush hour prompts thoughts.

One of those thoughts, for some of us, might be “why isn’t there a ferry service from the Peninsula to the CBD?”.

After all, we know that the Ferries are part of Auckland’s public transportation network. If one looks at a map of Auckland, we can see that in places, this is a thin city, pinched between two harbours.

This idea is obvious enough, that a feasibility study was conducted, and completed around 2013-2014.

Accordingly, I sent in an official request for information to AT, as it seemed intuitive that in a city so defined by coastline, sea-based ferries could be a valuable source of public transportation.

I think the information I received is a valuable snapshot of civic development in Auckland. My understanding is that it did not progress because it was estimated the resulting system would be unable to handle the high volume of predicted demand, as that would need higher-capacity ferries than were then in service.

Instead, buses.
